Some says that man's best friend, the dog can be a person's personal fitness trainer. Requiring frequent walks sharing unconditional love with its owner, a dog that matches well with your lifestyle and personality can bring much joy while helping you shed pounds.
Scientifically proven
The Hindu newspaperrecently reported pet owners have an edge over others and live a healthier and longer life as compared to those who do not own a pet. The finding is based on a study conducted by the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) funded by the State Ministry of Research and Development (BMBF). Based on the research report, the percentage of people without pet visiting a doctor was 18.5 percent more than pet-owners. The report also mentioned that pet owners who had a pet for more than five years benifited the most in terms of health and general well-being.
Better health and longer life
A recent reported in the British Journal of Health Psychology by Dr. Deborah Wells, a psychologist from Queen's University in Belfast, mentioned that dog owners tend to have lower blood pressure and cholesterol. The discovery was made after she studied over 5000 people at the Baker Medical Researched Institute in Melbourne. It revealed that pet owners had significantly lower systolic blood pressure and harmful blood fats than non-owners. The ability of companion pets to reduce our overall stress level probably accounts for most of their life-extending qualities.
Infact, according to a study of how psychological factors contribute to recovery rates for heart-disease patients, pet ownership ranked highest-even above such factors as a spouse or a supportive family in determining the patient's prognosis for long-term survival. This proves that having a dog as a pet resulted in a fewer medical complaints and there was some evidence that dogs could help their owners' recovery from serious illnesses such heart attacks. Owning a dog or a pet in general, not only contributes to a person's well-being, but also to overall happiness which leads to a longer lifespan.
